Should we carry on campus?
Now I know what you're thinking. Guns and school mixing together do not create a pretty topic. However, the world will be boring without controversial arguments, so here's mine.
Conceal Carry permits are permits that allow an individual to carry a handgun hidden on him/her. This can include in his/her pocket, waistband, ankle - virtually anywhere hidden. This permit only applies to hiding a gun on one’s person since at 21 years of age, you can legally carry a gun in the open, such as in a holster.
Carry or not to carry? Finding an agreeable solution to this argument has proven to be difficult, especially for teachers. On one side, you have the people who want safety and security. That’s reasonable. Nobody wants to be in a 'war zone' on a day to day basis. One the other side are the people who want to keep their rights. That’s also reasonable.
The constitution applies to the individual and not the whole, yet the whole want to affect the individual. It's not an easy answer.
However, what would happen if the government just decided to allow the ability to carry anywhere legal? Would the outcome be what people think will happen? We’re going to delve into the subject of logic:
As of right now, the country is still mourning the deaths of those in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting. Everything about that shooting was wrong, and it has been tainted with the political cesspool of agenda setters. One popular topic on what could’ve happened to prevent this tragedy is what if teachers were able to carry? This applies to all platforms of education from elementary all the way to college. This leads to concerns of teachers abusing power, but that’s ridiculous because the teachers would have to go through extensive training. Anyone would understand that.
Let’s not exclude the police either. People bring up a fair point that it’s the job of the police to protect the public. However, we absolutely do not have nearly enough officers to constantly man every U.S. campus, and certainly not enough time to call for one when a shooting is happening now. It goes without saying that resource officers are useful, and the uncovered story of the Maryland shooting shows that carrying can be beneficial. The shooter began open firing at 7:55 am and hit two students. The on-school campus officers quickly responded by open firing on the shooter. He unfortunately killed the shooter yet fortunately saved many other students. Nobody heard about this story, because the armed person stopped the shooter.
If one person was able to stop a severe tragedy, what would happen if there were two people who could stop it? Or 5? Or 10?
There is one more important thing to include with protection. A nationwide survey asked for participants to see if they would approve carrying on campus. The results were quite surprising as 95% of those surveyed said no to being able to conceal carry on campus. They believed the disadvantages would outweigh the advantages.
How so? Could it be that the carrier who had to go through background checks, training, and mental checks could just snap and start killing people? Or could it be the misuse of those firearms? We should be able to carry for immediate protection. Not 4 minute later protection, not “gun-free zone sign” protection, but immediate “I have a right to defend my own life” protection.
